"Unga (2kg) was KES 9, and Tissue was KSh 4. Tissue KSh 4! Tissue was very expensive then. Kind of a luxury item."

Kenya's inflation

Kenyans argued the rise in inflation has been negatively affecting the country's economy for years.

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) data showed inflation dropped to 7.9% in April 2023.

This represents a significant reduction of 1.3%, down from 9.2% reported in the month of March 2023.

The KNBS report showed in the period between April 2022 and April 2023, food prices remained at an upward trajectory.

Ruto's unga promise

This came even as the government promised to lower the prices of basic food commodities.

President William Ruto announced on Friday, April 14, that government had instituted measures to lower unga prices.

Ruto assured Kenyans that the price of a 2kg packet of maize flour will drop to KSh 150 across supermarkets.

But the promise turned out to be a long wait as supermarkets and small retail shops continue to sell unga at an average of KSh 200.

Some brands like Ajab and Umi are selling the commodity at KSh 167 and KSh 159 per 2kg packet, respectively.
